The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has suspended his planned visit to Argentina, which was scheduled for next week. The decision by the powerful American official came to light after President Javier Milei canceled his participation in the draw for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, as reported by the Argentine News Agency (NA). The move was not well-received within the administration of President Donald Trump, who was unhappy that Milei backed out of the event, which is set to take place this Friday, December 5, at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Initially, the head of state had announced he would travel for the event, and he was expected to hold a place of prominence alongside the Republican leader, as Argentina is the reigning world champion. However, it was confirmed last week that the visit was canceled amidst the government's feud with the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Claudio 'Chiqui' Tapia, who will be present at the draw. At the end of October, following the electoral victory of La Libertad Avanza, Bessent announced he would travel to Argentina before the end of the year, and this visit was set for next week, a plan that has now been scrapped. Bessent was in charge of finalizing the swap with the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina and even intervened in the local market by buying pesos, before and after the legislative elections.
